James Island as seen from Rialto Beach
Photography by J. Poehlman

James Island is an island at the mouth of the Quillayute River near La Push, Washington, reportedly named either for Francis W. James, the first white man to climb the island in 1885, though the Origin of Washington Geographic Names attributes the naming to a Quileute chief named "Jimmy". Until the second half of the 1800s, the island was the site of a fortified village. After this, it was used as a site for growing crops for residents of the mainland, as well as a burial site for tribal chiefs. At 160 feet (49 m) in height, the island was also used as a lookout for spotting whales. The island was formerly a sea stack, connected to the mainland, until the US Army Corps of Engineers rerouted the Quillayute River, separating it. Today, the US Coast Guard operates a lighthouse and foghorn for boats coming into the harbor.

St. Petersburg, FL, USA

A beautiful night view from Florida sent by Claudia (Postcrossing - Swap).

The colorful night of St. Petersburg taken from the Vinoy Hotel

St. Petersburg (often shortened to St. Pete or The Burg) is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States long known as a vacation destination for both American and foreign tourists.

With a purported average of some 360 days of sunshine each year, it is nicknamed "The Sunshine City". For that reason, the city has long been a popular retirement destination, especially for those in the United States from colder Northern climates. This reputation earned the city the derisive nickname of "God's waiting room". However, in recent years the population has shifted in a more youthful direction.
